Acts 2:1-4

ACTS STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What key points stood out to you in Acts 2:1-4 and from our study of the text on Sunday? Was there anything surprising or convicting?

  2. Why is the day of Pentecost when the Spirit was poured out, and God's people were filled up rather than a day before, after, or some other time of year? What is God communicating to his people by sending the Spirit on this particular day and appearing in this particular way?

  3. What happened on Mount Sinai that is similar to what we witness in Acts 2:1-4 (cf. Ex 19:9, 16, 18, and Deut 4:12)?

  4. How is Acts 2:1-4 unique and dissimilar from Exodus 19 concerning where God’s presence descends (cf. Acts 2:3-4)? How does Acts 2:1-4 fulfill the promises of Ezekiel 36:25-27 and Jeremiah 31:31-33 and far surpass what occurred on Mount Sinai?

  5. Why is this moment in Acts 2:1-4 so significant in salvation history? How does God’s presence descending to dwell within us set Christianity apart from every other world religion? How does Jesus articulate the significance of this day in John 14:20? How do you feel when you reflect on Paul’s words in Colossians 1:19, 2:9, and 10, and 1 Corinthians 3:16?

  6. What are the ongoing benefits of Acts 2:1-4 and the giving of the Spirit? Consider the following: how do we resist sin and learn to put our flesh to death (Rom 8:13; Gal 5:16), know the love of God and our sure identity (Rom 8:15-16; Gal 4:6), grow in hope and comfort (Rom 15:13; Acts 9:31), grow in Christlike character (Gal 5:22-25), understand the Bible (John 14:17, 26, 16:13), serve the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:8-10), proclaim the gospel (1 Cor 2:4, 4:8, 31, 1 Thess 1:5), and fulfill the mission Jesus has given to us (Acts 8:29, 10:19, 13:2-4, 16:6-7, and Luke 12:11-12)?

  7. How is this moment in Acts 2:1-4 a foretaste and first fruit of what is to come (cf Rev 7:9 and 21:3)? How are you encouraged by this?

  8. Are there any attitudes, actions, or affections that need to change as a result of studying Acts 2:1-4?
