Acts 2:21-42

ACTS STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What were your primary takeaways from our study of Acts 2:22-41 on Sunday?

  2. How would you summarize the four big ideas about Jesus in Peter’s gospel presentation (cf. Acts 2:22, 23, 24-32, 33-36? How does this summary help you in articulating the gospel? How does Peter’s gospel presentation answer the original question in Acts 2:12, “What does this mean?” (cf. Acts 2:33)?

  3. What does Peter quote to make his case about Jesus? What does this teach us about how we ought to view the Old Testament (cf Lk 24:27)?

  4. How is the crowd impacted by the gospel according to Acts 2:37? What does it mean to be cut to the heart? What is it that cuts them (cf. Acts 2:23, 36, 5:30, 7:52, Gal 3:13, 2 Cor 5:21, 1 Pet 2:24)? Why is it so important for us to see that it was our sin that crucified Jesus (cf. Is 53:5, Rom 4:25)? Reflecting on the verses in parentheses, how does grace also have extraordinary power to cut to the heart (cf. Rom 2:4)? Have you had an experience with the gospel like what is described in Acts 2:37?

  5. After having been cut to the heart, the people ask, “What must we do?” Peter says they must repent and be baptized. Though he doesn’t use the word believe or faith as Jesus did in Mark 1:15, it is clear that is what the crowd did based on Acts 2:44. Baptism is an outward expression of faith and an identification with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. How are repentance and faith expressed and displayed in baptism? How does baptism model the gospel presentation Peter gave?

  6. What does Peter promise in Acts 2:38-39 to those who repent and call on the name of Jesus and why is this good news for you?

  7. Read and reflect on Acts 2:24. What does it teach us about Jesus’ power and authority? If he has power over death, what else does he have power over? Why is this such good news, and how does it give us hope in our everyday life?

  8. What can we learn from this text as individuals and as a church about the witness we should have?

  9. What do we learn in this text about the power of the gospel to transform lives?
