Acts 20:1-16
ACTS STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
What did you glean from our study of Acts 20:1-16?
According to Acts 20:1-2, Paul encouraged the disciples at Ephesus and then traveled all the way to and through Macedonia to give those disciples “much encouragement.” Why do you think encouragement is so important for new believers, mature disciples, and whole churches (cf. 1 Thess 5:11, Heb 3:13, 10:24)? Why do we still need this today?
The admonition in Hebrews 10:24-25 is to “consider how to stir one another up to love and good deeds...and encourage one another.” Think of someone in our church family who might need encouragement. Consider some ways you could encourage them in their faith this week and then commit to doing that. Why is “considering how” to encourage and then encouraging others an important exercise/ discipline for our own spiritual growth?
According to Acts 20:4, the men traveling with Paul were from Asia Minor, Derbe, Thessalonica, and Berea, cities along Paul’s previous missionary journey where he shared the gospel and established churches. What can we learn from Acts 20:4 about discipleship and leadership development?
In Troas, the disciples gather, break bread, and listen to teachings from an apostle. In other words, they continue to follow in the footsteps of Acts 2:42. Why is this simple but ancient practice so important and so crucial for us today?
Though Eutychus is dead, Paul descended from the light-filled third floor into the darkness, embraced Eutychus, and breathed life into him. What picture is Luke painting for us through this scene?
One of the many things we can glean from this scene with Eutychus is that death and darkness do not have the last word. What does that do for the believers in that moment and us today, according to Acts 20:12?
To say they received “no little comfort” is to say they were greatly encouraged. This is the third time the word encouraged is used in Acts 20:1-16. What does that tell us about one of the purposes of Paul’s travels and the gospel of Jesus Christ?
