How were you encouraged or convicted in our study of Acts 17:10-15?
How are the Jews in Berea different from the Jews in Thessalonica? What does it mean that they were
“more noble than the those in Thessalonica?” What is Luke commending to us by saying that?
How did they receive Paul’s word about Jesus according to Acts 17:11? Is this how we respond to the truth claims we encounter every day? Why is the “daily” part of their examination so important?
What command does John issue in 1 John 4:1a, and what is his motive according to 1 John 4:1b? What complementary point does Paul make in 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21? What additional imperatives does Paul wisely urge us to do in 2 Corinthians 10:5 and 13:5? Taken together, what wisdom are we offered in all of these verses? Why is it so important for Christians to test everything they hear, even their own thoughts?
One problem for John’s audience in 1 John was a lack of resources and information and an influx of false teachers. We have an inverse problem. We have an overload of information and false teachers. How is the example of the Bereans in Acts 17:10-15 and the wisdom offered in 1 John 4:1-2, 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21, and 2 Corinthians 10:5 and 13:5 relevant and helpful today?
There is no end to the voices competing for our attention and allegiance. How can we ensure that we are shaped by God’s voice above all? How can we help one another do this in gospel community?
What attitudes, actions, or affections need to change as a result of our study of Acts 17:10-15? Are there any voices in your life that are louder than Jesus’? Are there any practical things you can do to increase Jesus’ voice in your life and decrease the priority of other voices?
