Ecclesiastes 1:1-11

ECCLESIASTES STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What previous experience do you have with reading or studying Ecclesiastes? What is your initial reaction to reading Ecclesiastes 1:1-11? Was there anything that you found interesting, new, or helpful in our study of Ecclesiastes 1:1-11? What excites or intrigues you about going forward in this study?

  2. Qoheleth, translated as the Preacher or Professor, wants us to gather around and listen to instruction. What makes the Preacher’s words different from any sermon or instruction you’ve ever heard?

  3. Though he takes an unusual approach to getting us to God, why is it helpful to hear the negative objections and apparent cynicism of the Preacher of Ecclesiastes?

  4. The Professor uses three key phrases throughout the book: Under the sun, all is vanity, and chasing after the wind. What do these phrases mean, and how do they help us understand the Professor’s primary message? Why is the context of “under the sun” so important to keep in mind?

  5. In Ecclesiastes 1:3-9, the Professor makes the case that we are never fully satisfied and are on a constant quest for more. What does our longing for more say about us or teach us?

  6. In contrast to the empty air of life under the sun, what did God fill us with according to Genesis 2:7, and what does God offer according to Psalm 16:11?

  7. How do the title “son of David” and the conclusion of Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 give us an indicator of the Professor’s true intentions? How does Jesus surpass and resolve the Professor’s quest for meaning (read Luke 11:31, Matthew 11:28-30, and Mark 8:36)?

  8. How does understanding the message of the Professor help us live more meaningful lives here and now? What will you take away and apply this week from our study?
