Acts 8:9-25

ACTS STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What were the highlights or questions that stood out to you from our study of Acts 8:9-25 on Sunday?

  2. What comparison and contrast do you see between Philip in Acts 8:5-8 and Simon in Acts 8:9-11?

Who is the central focus of their words, signs, wonders, and power?

  3. Acts 8:4-8 showed us the gospel advancing to Samaritans. Now we learn in verses 9-11 that many of the Samaritans had been deceived and following the powerful influence of Simon. Despite this, what do we learn about the power of the gospel Acts 8:12? What hope does that give you for your irreligious family and friends?

  4. As we share the good news of the gospel with friends and family, what should we know, who should we proclaim, and how should we pray according to 2 Corinthians 4:4-6?

  5. There’s much debate over what it means in Acts 8:13 that Simon believed. Was Simon really born again? What evidence would you point to in the text for your answer? What does Peter say in verses 20-23 that seems to provide clarity? What are some of the fruits of true conversion?

  6. What warnings does this text offer us? What similar warning does Jesus give in Matthew 7:33?

  7. What role do the apostles play in Acts 8:14-17? Given the animosity between Jew and Samaritan (cf. John 4:9 and Lk 9:52-56), why was it so important to have the apostle’s stamp of approval and the sign of the Spirit? What verification and authentication tools do we have in our lives today as a final authority to sift and sort what we see, hear, and experience in the world (cf. 2 Tim 3:15-17, Rom 15:4, John 14:26, 15:26, 16:13)?

  8. How were you encouraged or challenged by the study of Acts 8:9-25?
